
AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — A Texas 6th grader was honored for his heroic actions when a classmate brought a gun to school and threatened to shoot someone.
On Feb. 20, a student brought a gun to the Travis Middle School 6th grade campus.
Police said the 6th grade boy showed the gun to a friend in one of the bathrooms. The friend pointed the gun at a third boy who was also in the bathroom.
According to police, the student who brought the gun told other students he was going to shoot someone on campus.
We understand the immense pressure kids face from their peers, and we want to acknowledge a brave student who took action, despite the personal risk, to protect his fellow students and faculty at Travis," police. "Many students were aware of this, but only one had the courage to report it to a teacher."The Amarillo Police Department awarded the student with a Citizen's Citation.
We thank him publicly for his bravery and his family for supporting his actions during this very frightening situation," said police.The student who brought the gun and the one who pointed it at another student was arrested and booked into the Youth Center of the High Plains.
The 12-year-old boys are charged with attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful carry weapon-weapon free zone, terroristic threat, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful carry of a weapon-prohibited place.
