WASHINGTON (TND) — A 9-year-old girl was fatally shot in the head shortly after getting ice cream with her father in Chicago, according to reports.

The child has been identified as Serabi Medina.

Police said 43-year-old Michael Goodman was charged with first-degree murder in connection to the child's death. Authorities said the child was killed Saturday night.

Megan Kelle, who lives in the area, told the Chicago Sun-Times Goodman shot Serabi after he complained about noise.

Before he shot her, he had said something about them being too loud,” Kelley told the media outlet.It just didn’t make sense," she added. "None of it made sense. Everybody in the community would just tell him they are just kids having fun playing. Just let them be.”

Kelley also told the media outlet Serabi's mother was shot and killed in 2018.

A GoFundMe account was set up in honor of Serabi by Jaleesa Medina, who claims to be a member of the family.

"Unfortunately my family suffered a great tragedy over the weekend," Medina wrote. "Serabi Medina was murdered outside of her home this past Saturday, August 5th, 2023. She was a beautiful little girl who adored her dog and her father more than anything. She was only 9 years old, she had her whole life ahead of her. We appreciate anything you can give to help with the funeral expenses. Anything will help. We thank everything for all the outpour of love and support we have received over the last few days. This has been a hard time for my family but we are leaning on each other for strength."

One person who made a donation shared the following message:

We live nearby and I remember seeing her and her dad in the summertime walking past the house, or riding past on their bikes. It would always give me a little joy when they popped up, seeing how much they clearly enjoyed their time together. What happened was a shocking and unbelievable tragedy. My thoughts go out to her family, and especially her father.

After the shooting, Goodman was tackled by Serabi's father and shot during a struggle, according to a police report. He was taken to a hospital.

“He ran over there, football-tackled this guy," community activist Andrew Holmes said.

A vigil was held for Serabi Monday night, while flowers and plush toys were placed at the scene.

Goodman appear in court on Tuesday and a judge denied him bond, according to reports.
