'Better than any book:' Annual Vietnam War exhibit to be displayed at Bedford American Legion

"Better than any book you'll read."

That's what organizers are saying about a Vietnam War exhibit coming to the Bedford American Legion.

For the tenth year now, the Bedford County Vietnam Veterans Association is holding an exhibition of their personal effects from the war.

This year comes with a change of venue as the exhibit will be on display at the Bedford American Legion.

The purpose of the display is to educate the younger generations, mostly school students, about the veterans’ role in the Vietnam War.

The veterans involved say it’s "extremely meaningful" to them to interact and educate the students because their numbers are dwindling; only about 20 percent of Vietnam War combat veterans are still alive.

“When I first meet the students, I always like to emphasize the fact that when we were young, just like them, we grew up pretty fast; and we had experiences that many people, including ourselves, might never have ever imagined,” says Bill Mock.

The exhibit is on display through Thursday, from noon to 3 p.m., in the lower dining hall of Post #113 of the Bedford American Legion, which is located along Route 220 northbound in Bedford.
