The driver who hit and killed three construction workers on I-83 in April fell asleep at the wheel, Pennsylvania State Police announced Friday.

Police released more information about the April 17 crash in a press release.

Officials said the driver of a box truck, a 24-year-old man from Massachusetts, was driving south on I-83, approaching mile marker 35.5 when the crash happened.

The driver was "traveling at a rate of speed greater than what would be considered reasonable and prudent when entering an active work zone," and falling asleep, according to police.

He hit the back of a construction vehicle that was in the right lane, police said, which propelled the box truck onto the southbound shoulder, where he hit three construction workers.

The box truck continued up a grassy embankment and then side-swiped the roof and mirror of a Ford Edge before returning to the road.

The vehicle came to rest after it hit the concrete traffic barrier that separates the north and southbound lanes.

The constructions workers were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the box truck was not injured in the crash.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, no charges have been filed against the driver at this point, but an investigation is ongoing.
