JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — A decision was made in federal court Friday regarding the suspension of Bishop McCort’s wrestling program.
U.S. District Judge Stephanie Haines denied an injunction request that would’ve lifted the program’s two-season ban.
Seventeen parents, including head wrestling coach Bill Bassett, had requested the injunction following the program’s suspension after an investigation into recruitment violations of PIAA by-laws.
Following that investigation, Bishop McCort athletics were placed on probation Oct. 6.
Bassett was suspended from coaching for two years and the school’s wrestling program is prohibited from participating in the postseason competition for two years.
With the wrestling postseason underway, the parents were seemingly hoping an injunction would be granted, thus lifting the program’s two-year ban.
In her decision, Judge Haines said the parents failed to prove that the punishment hurts their children and coach.
