PA Turnpike Commission hosting public online meeting to discuss changes

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is hosting an interactive online meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, to discuss some changes happening this month.

According to a press release from the PA Turnpike Commission, Oct. 27 marks the start of cashless tolling in certain locations. The change will go into effect at the interchange in Lawrence County near the Ohio border and on PA Turnpike 66 in Westmoreland County.

Drivers on the Turnpike will no longer have to stop to pay their toll but will instead pay through the PA Turnpike TOLL BY PLATE system. The TOLL BY PLATE method will snap a picture of the license plate, and drivers will receive their toll bill in the mail once a month.

According to the release, those who use E-ZPass will pay as they normally would.

Turnpike CEO Mark Compton says this system has proven successful in other parts of the country.

"It allows for the free flow of traffic by not stopping to pay a toll, it eases congestion, boosts mobility and ensures safer travel for motorists throughout the region," Compton said.

According to the No Cash Zone website, cashless tolling in Pennsylvania is being phased out over several years. A few locations have already started using the new method. They include the Beaver Valley Express Way, the Findlay Connector, Clarks Summit/Keyser Avenue and the Delaware River Bridge. All other locations in the state will still require drivers to grab a paper ticket.

Tonight's online meeting is open to the public. It can be accessed on tablets or smartphones, and participants will be able to email in questions as it is happening.
