Punxsutawney, Pa.--Punxsutawney Borough Police Chief, James Borza, has unexpectedly resigned.

Punxsutawney Mayor, Richard Alexander, said Borza handed him the resignation letter Friday. 6 News asked Alexander what his reaction was.

"It was somewhat of a surprise but it really wasn't," Alexander said.

6 News then asked Alexander why he wasn't surprised but Alexander said he wasn't able to comment on that right now.

In Borza's resignation letter addressed to Alexander, Borza said:

"Sadly, over the last few months it has become increasingly obvious neither you nor I have the power to run the Department or discipline the officers and employees as we should. I have come from a department which installed discipline and respect for fellow officers and supervisors. This department does not encourage this same philosophy. While most officers and employees adhere to these beliefs, not all do.

Prior to taking this position I was warned of the dysfunctional activity and happenings by several Council members and officers. I accepted the position with the hope and belief that I would and could resolve these issues and have the department become a respected organization in the community and surrounding area. I see now that is not possible."

6 News asked Alexander if something was going on within the police department that could have caused Borza to resign.

"Again, I can't comment on that," said Alexander. "Borza was a good chief while he was here."

Alexander said Borza brought great things to the community, like handing out turkey's for Thanksgiving and helping families with Christmas.

Borza, from Benezette, was a retired state trooper before becoming Punxsutawney's Chief of Police.

He was hired in March of 2015. Borza has resigned less than a month away from his one year anniversary.
