FORT HILL, Pa. (WJAC) -- There is an alert for residents in Somerset County. 911 officials say the dam at High Point Lake is leaking, and those living downstream need to be on alert.
Dispatchers with Somerset County 911 say there's no imminent danger, but they say the Fish and Boat Commission reported there is a leak at the breast of the lake, with potential for the dam to erode and possibly even fail.
This lake is located in Addison Township near Mount Davis, the highest point in Pennsylvania at about 3,000 feet.
We're told the Fish and Boat Commission did an inspection at the lake last night. That's when they noticed a leak at the dam.
6 News talked to some residents in that area Monday night, who say the fire department notified them earlier and told them to remain on alert.
One family told 6 News they already evacuated the area out of precaution, but officials say the alert is "preventative and precautionary only."
The Somerset County Department of Emergency Services says the public should avoid the area downstream of the dam in the low-lying areas alongside Glades Run, Mcclintock Run and the Castleman River through portions of Addison and Lower Turkeyfoot townships.
Turkeyfoot Valley Area School District sent out an automated message to families saying it was in contact with emergency management and that because of the situation, it would be operating on a two-hour delay on Tuesday.
